Northern California rarely experiences lightning and thunder, but the weather forecast indicates that the coming days will be an exception.

According to reports, the thunderstorm weather pattern in Northern California officially began on the 9th and will last at least until the 11th. The number of thunderstorms will increase day by day, with frequent lightning, hail, unpredictable strong winds, and even the possibility of funnel clouds and tornadoes. The frequency of lightning in Northern California is much lower than in other parts of the United States, but the forecast for the next few days shows that the conditions for thunderstorm formation are very favorable.

A vast, slow-moving system known as a cutoff low is steadily moving toward California this week. On the 8th, it was close enough to California to form towering cumulonimbus clouds in the mountainous areas, triggering thunderstorms, and on the 9th, the possibility of thunderstorms increased along the coast and in valley areas.

Four main conditions are needed for thunderstorms to form: moisture, instability, wind shear, and a triggering factor. From the 9th to the 11th, as the cutoff low brings subtropical air over California, moisture will be plentiful. This moist air means heavy rain could bring half an inch of rainfall within an hour or less, enough to cause short-term flooding.

Additionally, instability occurs when air masses near the surface are warmer and more prone to rising than the air above. This vertical movement is key for thunderstorm development. On the 9th, atmospheric instability will increase in the Central Valley, wine country, and the East Bay inland valleys, peaking on the 10th. The marine layer may keep coastal air stable until late on the 10th or the 11th, when it might dissipate, opening the door for thunderstorms in San Francisco.

As the cutoff low gradually approaches, wind shear will strengthen over the coming days. The National Weather Service states that the counterclockwise rotation around the low-pressure center will promote the formation of "rotating storms capable of producing tornadoes." These conditions may all be present, but without a trigger or storm initiation factor, thunderstorms will not form.

A second, more intense weather system will arrive on the 11th, bringing a cold front across Northern California, providing the strongest triggering factor for heavy rain and thunderstorms so far. However, cloud cover ahead of it might limit the extent of atmospheric instability. Even so, it is expected to bring at least several hours of heavy precipitation, gusts up to 45 mph, and feet of snow to the Sierra Nevada. The storm on the 11th is predicted to be quite strong, and residents of the Bay Area are advised to stay indoors unless necessary.
